After reading through many great questions from our community, we have hand-picked three questions to respond to for this week's "Ask the Developers." While there were many outstanding questions, we were not able to answer them all this week unfortunately. Below are the questions and answers from the Dev team. Be on the lookout for the next opportunity to submit questions for TimeGate to answer!
----------------

Q: (SgtSchwerpunkt)Will 360 users ever have the ability to browse a list of servers displaying information such as server settings and ping?

A: You already do! If you head to the advanced section of the multiplayer menu, you have a variety of server browsing options available to you. Any server that a friend is currently playing in will show up in the friends tab which will quickly allow players to join a friend’s match that is currently in progress. Additionally, players can look through all of the servers they have recently played on, or they can use the specific tab to search for a server by the host’s gamertag or clan tag.

All of the official servers have been set up with clan tags for convenient server browsing. Our servers are tagged with [US1] [US2] [US3] [UK1] [UK2] [UK3] and [AU1]. All servers display their game mode, ping, and other information players would find relevant.

Q: (BombrMan) Is there any chance that the matchmaking would be made to facilitate friends landing in the same game on the same team more seamlessly?

A: No need to rely on matchmaking. As noted above, the advanced server button allows users to directly join games their friends are playing in. You may also use Games for Windows – LIVE or Xbox LIVE to join a friend’s game directly. When joining a game, Section 8 will try to place you into your friend’s team and squad if possible.

For large groups of friends and clans wanting to run clan matches, we have official servers set up that have auto-balance disabled. This will allow players to join games and freely switch to the other team to insure that players are grouped with friends.

Q: (chapstickbomber) Are there plans to tweak weapon and equipment stats as well as passive modules in an update as more data from ranked play comes in?

A: We are capable of making balance tweaks easily and quickly when we need to, we just wanted to give the community at large a chance to play the game and feel out the balance first. We’ve been gathering balance data since launch, and we expose a lot of our gathered numbers on the Statistics section of the website (go check it out!). If we feel the need to make an update, the community will know our thought process as to why.

Greetings Section 8 Community,

Welcome to the first installment of our Community Updates. This will be the first of many posts which aim to help keep community members updated on all things related to Section 8. Consider this one of the many ways we plan on saying thanks for all of your support.

This update includes a couple of exciting announcements, as well as information on problems that we've seen our community reporting on a regular basis. Read on to learn more about just what TimeGate has been up to, and what we will be up to in the coming weeks.

STATS PORTAL
As many of you are aware, the Section 8 stats portal was recently launched. Beyond being able to view all current personal stats, players who sign-up will also have access to clan support, advanced leaderboards, and the ability to view their friends' stats in great detail. If you haven't already done so, please head over to JoinSection8.com/Stats to sign up and get in on a ton of features you've been missing out on.

Several reports came in over the weekend that stats were taking days to update, and we're pleased to announce that this has been resolved. We will continue to track this issue over the next few days to insure that it does not resurface.

Also note that we are actively looking into the 12 player clan limit. We hope to have this problem resolved as well in the next few days.

XBOX 360 SERVER UPDATES
For all of the 360 gamers out there, be advised that we've converted a number of our servers to alternate game modes in response to popular demand. For those of you wanting to easily play with friends, we've added a number of servers which have auto-balance disabled. For those out there who want to team up and cooperatively fight against an army of bots, check out the cooperative servers that we've set up. And finally, for those crazy enough to suit up and join the Section 8 soldiers on the frontlines against overwhelming odds, we've set up several swarm and super swarm servers. A full list of where you can get in on the action follows.

Autobalance Off: US-Official-510 through 515
Swarm: US-Official-519 through 524
Super Swarm: US-Official-528 through 532
Cooperative: US-Official-537 through 541
Extreme Cooperative: US-Official-546 through 550

UPCOMING LAUNCH DATES
Expect server populations to start growing soon as we proudly welcome community members from Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia into the ranks of Section 8 players. If you were not already aware, please take note of the following launch dates:

UK - 9/11/09
Australia - 9/11/09
Europe - 9/18/09
Southeast Asia - 9/18/09
We're looking forward to everyone from these territories joining the rest of us on the battlefield starting as early as this Friday!

KNOWLEDGE DATABASE
If you have not already done so, head over to http://support.timegate.com to check out our new knowledge database. This database already contains answers to several questions players have been asking, but if you can't find the answer to your question know that forum posters can post questions of their own. We have a customer support team who are standing by to answer your questions, so please feel free to take advantage of this new and exciting service!

Games for Windows - LIVE
We are aware that a number of users are having trouble getting Games for Windows - LIVE working correctly. Please refer to our support database GfWL Help article to obtain possible solutions to these problems.

PLAY WITH THE DEVS on XBOX LIVE
We are excited to announce that Xbox.com will be hosting a “Game with Developers” event for Section 8 this Saturday, September 12th! Developers from TimeGate will play Section 8 with Xbox LIVE Gold Members from 6p.m.-9p.m. EST (3p.m.-6p.m. PST). If you want to make certain you are able to participate in this event, please add the following gamertags to your Xbox - LIVE friend list:
Section8Dev1
Section8Dev2
Section8Dev3
Section8Dev4
Section8Dev5
Section8Dev6
Section8Dev7
Section8Dev8
Section8Dev9
Section8Dev10
Section8Dev11
Section8Dev12
Section8Dev13

For more details on this event, stay tuned to the Section 8 forums, or visit the event's site at Xbox.com. We look forward to playing against everyone this Saturday!

ASK THE DEVS
We're also pleased to announce that we will be fielding questions from our community members to respond to on a weekly basis. If you have a question that you've been dying to ask a developer, head over to this thread to start posting your questions! Check back Friday to see which questions get answered!

REPORTED ISSUES
Please note that we are aware of the bug where stats are occasionally being lost after playing on a ranked server. Resolving this bug is one of our top priorities for the first Section 8 patch. Unfortunately, there is no way to recover any of the lost data at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we appreciate everyone's patience while we work to make certain that this problem is eliminated.

Several other issues will be resolved in the first patch for Section 8 as well. Please stay tuned for an announcement regarding this in the near future.

CLOSING
We hope you've enjoyed the first of many community updates to come. Be sure to check back frequently for future updates!

So an Xbox 360 player can run a dedicated Xbox 360 server on a PC?

RS: Right. This gave us an opportunity to interject into the traditional model that you have on Xbox 360 -- which is just listing games where one guys hosts it, people connect to him, and he's playing and both being the server kind of pulling a PC aspect -- a dedicated server model where you have a favorite pub or community.

One of the advantages of doing this is it afforded us this opportunity where you can run a dedicated server for the Xbox 360 on your PC, and then we're able to achieve things like 32 players on the Xbox 360. Otherwise, it would have just been 16 players or whatever you'd see in games like Halo.

Greetings Section 8 Community,

Welcome to the second Section 8 Community Update. Today we'll be discussing our recent play with the developers event, server updates, and more feedback on some of the issues important to all of you.

As a side note, please feel free to comment with feedback after the end of this post. We're always looking for input from our community to help drive our focus at TimeGate. We appreciate each of your contributions, and look forward to seeing what each of you has to say.

Without further ado, let's get on with today's update!

XBOX 360 - PLAY WITH THE DEVELOPERS RECAP
This weekend we had several developers playing on Xbox Live with members of the community across five 32 player servers. The action was intense, and many of the developers were hunted to near extinction by the ranks of our community. Some of our staff have been playing Section 8 for more than a year at this point, and the community more than held their own in this event. Well done!

We'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who participated this weekend. Your words of encouragement brought smiles to all of our faces. It is incredibly rewarding to hear that the game we've worked on for so long is being enjoyed by so many people. We were excited to see that all 5 servers remained consistently full throughout a majority of the event. We considered the event a huge success, and we could not have done it without each of you. Thank you.

To those of you who could not get into the servers, we apologize. We tried our best to cycle through as many players as possible throughout the event. We'll try to make some adjustments for next time to insure we get more of you in on the action!

We had a blast, and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

PC ONLINE CONNECTIVITY PROBLEMS
Some users have reported that they are receiving a message in the Multiplayer news ticker which reads "Section 8 Online is not available at this time. Please try again later. (Some features are not available)" This is preventing these users from finding and playing on the official Ranked Servers.

To fix the problem once it is occurring, simply use the "Home" key to bring up Games for Windows - LIVE and select "Sign Out", then sign back in with your account.

As a temporary workaround, you can prevent this problem from occuring by waiting to "Sign In" to Games for Windows - LIVE until you have reached the Main Menu screen. The dev team is investigating this issue, and will be including a permanent fix in the upcoming patch.

If you continue to experience this problem after using the above two workarounds, please submit a ticket with our customer support team at our Support Center

SERVER CONNECTIVITY UPDATES
As many of you are aware, last night (9/14/09) updates were made to all of the official Section 8 servers. This should help resolve a number of connectivity problems users were experiencing resulting in players being disconnected from their server. If you continue to notice connectivity problems, please let us know by submitting a ticket to our Support Center.

US OFFICIAL SERVER CLAN TAGS
We've now added clan tags to the official US servers for easier server browsing (much like the ones that are already in place for the UK). Additionally, server game modes were redistributed to better meet player demand.

US Xbox 360
To search for servers by clan tag, go to "Multiplayer" > "Advanced" > "Specific" tab and select "Clan Tag". Input the three-letter clan tag ("US1", "US2", etc.), then select "Search".

US1: Ranked Servers (Bots)
US2: Ranked Servers (Partial Bots / No Bots)
US3: Special Game Modes Servers (Auto-balance off, Coop, Swarm, etc.)

US PC
To search for servers by clan tag, go to "Multiplayer" > "Find Servers" > "Search" button in bottom right > "Specific" tab, and input the three-letter clan tag ("US1", "US2", etc.), then select "Search".

US1: Ranked Servers
US2: Special Game Mode Servers (Auto-balance off, Coop, Swarm, etc.)

PC Users, please note that your best bet for finding active servers is still to use "Multiplayer" > "Find Servers" > "Search" button in the bottom right and select Min Players: "Not Empty". This will only return servers that have players on them.

DEVELOPER TIPS
If you have not done so already, check out our first Developer Tip. The first installment explains how all of the weapons function in respect to shields and armor, and also reveals a largely unnoticed secret of the player's crosshair.

We plan on doing many more of these developer tips, so keep an eye out on the S8 Announcements forums to insure you keep a leg up on the competition.

CLOSING
Thanks for checking out our second community update. Tune in next time for more exciting announcements, more handy solutions, and more community news!

Conclusion

I’ve probably gushed enough to make the conclusion as obvious as it is foregone: I think S8 is the most incredible, multiplayer focused FPS game to come out in years. I’ve recently had a great time with Shadowrun because of the way it mixes magic, melee combat, and shooting into an interesting and tasty stew, but S8 is so much more innovative (and polished) that it’s truly in a category of its own. It’s like the developers took the best bits of pretty much every popular FPS ever made, crammed them all together into a single game, and then removed or fixed all the stuff that wasn’t any fun. All that’s left is pure gaming crack.

I’m not saying that the game will be a hit with everyone. If you’re a diehard Quake fanatic, for example, then you probably won’t like this game, and let’s be honest: S8 is going to be far too complex for you because it involves more than running, jumping, and shooting. But if you’re an FPS gamer looking for something fast paced, yet deeply strategic, with a huge wealth of tactical flexibility, S8 definitely deserves a look. Frankly, the whole Tribes community should just go buy it en masse, save for those die-hards, I suppose, who won’t play a game that doesn’t have skiing. You people know who you are.

Just bear in mind that the game remains horribly broken as I write this, at least for us folks who bought the game on Steam. To be clear, I’ve read only one report of anyone having a problem with the CD/DVD retail version, and I don’t even know if that’s genuine. Since first penning the review, I’ve been in contact with someone at TimeGate and have been assured they’re on top of it and working to correct the issue. As I’ve noted above, there are also various steps one may take to resolve the problems. Properly warned ye be, says I. I didn’t let that deter me from buying the game on launch day, and frustrating as the hours were while I spent fighting to make it run, I have to say it was definitely worth it. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

I got this email about the Section 8 closed beta and it is looking that we are getting close for a release on the beta. I for one can't wait to get started with Section 8 and testing.

Quote
INCOMING MESSAGE FROM TIMEGATE
Thank you for your interest in becoming a beta tester for Section 8. Your role and the feedback you give us is of vital importance; we will listen to you, work with you, and with your help, create a game that will fulfill our goal to deliver an incredible, rewarding, and addictive shooter experience.

It's lofty talk and you've heard it all before, but we believe we have something incredibly special in Section 8. We've removed the predictability in multiplayer games with burning-in (no more spawn-camping!) and Dynamic Combat Missions (DCMs), meaning the flow of battle is never predetermined. We've also given you the freedom to choose your role on the battlefield, allowing you to tactically "loadout" on weapons and gear. Want to be a lightweight sprinting sniper? No problem. How about a slower, but powerful heavyweight death machine? All yours.

We've been hard at work on Section 8 for the past few years; constantly reviewing and implementing new ideas to deliver an innovative and exciting shooter experience. We're thrilled to have you onboard now as we head towards launch, and can't wait to hear your thoughts.

More details are on their way as we roll out the first wave of invites for testing that is scheduled to begin in early Summer. Our first wave of testers will be selected by PC system specs and other criteria—more on that soon.

Selected participants will also be contacted to sign-up for the Beta Test forums, where you will be able to talk with your fellow testers and TimeGate's Section 8 development team.

Should you be selected, please remember that your participation as a beta tester will be covered by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). This means that you cannot discuss Section 8 with others except in the official closed beta forums. Sadly, the NDA means that we can only accept testers aged 18 and older until we reach the open beta phase. We can't wait to get things rolling and we'll be back in touch with you very soon. You'll never forget your first burn-in!

Sincerely,
Drew Rechner, Community Liaison, TimeGate Studios

The staff over at Outpostgamez had the opportunity to ask some questions to the devs of Section 8. Here is a little look at it.
Quote
1. Q: When a player burns-in to drop on a location, can you explain how you will touch down and what type of control you will have when you drop on a location?

A: The player essentially has two choices when burning-in. They can either drop quickly without braking or they can choose to use their air-brake, effectively slowing their descent. The advantage to braking is that the player will be able to steer their way through the air for a more precise landing, possibly avoiding some of the perils of battle. If the player does not brake, they will slam into the ground at an incredible rate and suffer a very brief disorientation. Of course, this method of burn-in can also serve as an extremely deadly weapon when landing on top of objects or even other players.

Head on to Outpost Gamez and read the interview in full!
